DTI Advanced Urban Rifle with John Farnam
Thanks for joining us for our Advanced Defensive Urban Course
Handguns will be carried by all students during all the instruction, so we can practice longarm-handgun transition. You’ll need fifty rounds of handgun ammunition.
In addition to your pistol, you will need a medium or heavy, autoloading or bolt-action, military rifle in 7.62x51, 7.62x39, 5.54x39, 30-06, 6.8SPC, M1 Carbine, or 5.56x45 caliber (223). Military rifles chamber for similar, but less well-known cartridges, are generally acceptable also. Pistol-cartridge-firing carbines, such as the Beretta CX4 and H&K MP-5, are also acceptable. We will also accept military look-alike 22 rimfire rifles in some cases. Lever actions, and other, low-capacity, sporting rifles are not recommended. Slings are mandatory, as we will be running a hot range.
High-magnification, high profile, close-eye-relief scopes are not suitable for our purposes. Good, iron sights are recommended. Low-power, low-profile, forward-mounted optics are acceptable and recommended. The best rifle to bring is a military autoloader. Students should be advised that their rifles will see some strenuous, rugged use and may get scratched up a bit. Pretty guns are best left at home. You will need five-hundred rounds of rifle ammunition and at least three magazines.
The course will be outdoors and will entail some physical activity, so you will need to dress appropriately (long pants, long-sleeve shirt, sturdy shoes). You may get dirty, so wear something heavy-duty but inexpensive. Don't show up in sweat pants or shorts. Police officers may work out of their uniform, duty gear if they wish.
All students must bring their own safety equipment, including safety glasses, hearing protection, and a baseball cap.
Finally, you will need a gun case or box, so that you can safely carry your rifle on and off the range. Your handguns may be carried onto and off the range in a holster (concealed, unless you're in uniform) or in a gun-rug or box. All longarms must be carried on and off the range in cases.
Our training text, The Farnam Method of Defensive Handgunning, is now available from DTI Publications, as is our new book The Farnam Method of Defensive Rifle and Shotgun Shooting, and you may contact them at 303 443 9817. Vicki’s new book, Training Women to Shoot, a Law Enforcement Instructor’s Guide is now available also.
